"Do I need to send in my declarations at the end of the month?"
No, because each certificate's information is posted to the insurance database immediately - you don't need to spend any time at the end of the month on reporting.
"How do I put the shipper's name on the certificate, instead of mine?"
When insuring a new shipment select "Add New Shipper" from the drop down list prior to calculating the premium. Then fill in the requested information on the following page and click on "I accept".
"Do I have to type in the shipper information each time?"
No. If the shipper is a regular customer you need only type their information once into the database and check off the "Add Shipper/Insured" box. This customer information is saved as a template and will automatically appear in the shipper drop down list.
"What if the cargo is already in transit?"
Each mode of transport has a booking time frame. Ask your broker for the details. If it is beyond the time frame your request will be referred to the brokers for review.
"What does referral mean? Will the shipment be a referral each time"
When a rate request is submitted and it goes to referral, this means that Marsh Canada Limited will personally review the risk to assess it and contact you directly. There are many different reasons for a referral, such as the type of commodity being shipped, the destination and the value of the shipment amongst others. Repetitive shipments won't necessarily go to referral each time.
"When do I pay?"
If you are a 'CREDIT' client, Marsh Canada Limited will send an e-mail invoice on the first day of each month. 'PAY AS YOU GO' clients will be prompted to make a credit card payment with either Visa or MasterCard for each certificate, prior to being able to print each certificate. If you do not have a credit card, other arrangements can be made. Please contact your broker.
"How do I know that my information will be transmitted securely?"
CargoCover® uses a combination of unique user identification numbers, passwords, and industry-standard secure socket layer (SSL) technology with 128 bit encryption to ensure your information is well protected.
"I am not very familiar with computer software. Is CargoCover® easy to use?"
CargoCover® is designed to be fast and easy to use. Of course, if you need a little bit of help, our full time technical support staff would be happy to help you with any questions you have. Just contact CargoCover® Customer Service at 1-888-289-7744 or 1-514-289-9090 or e-mail to support@CargoCover®.com
"What if I make an error in my certificate?"
Select the "Certificate Management" option; you then indicate which certificate number you would like changed. Once the certificate selected appears, click on the change button immediately above, and in the text field provided indicate exactly what changes you would like to have made and click on submit; the change/s will be forwarded to Marsh Canada Limited.
"How do I get a copy of the changed certificate?"
Marsh Canada Limited will provide an email notification when the appropriate change/s have been made. You can then reprint the certificate through the Certificate Management section using the original certificate number, and clicking on the reprint button immediately above.
"How do I print my certificates so that they fit on one page?"
Under "File" in your browser go to "Page Setup" and adjust your left, right, top and bottom margins to 0.25 inches or 5mm. To avoid any undesired text on the top or bottom of your certificate, we suggest you also remove all text or symbols that are in the header and footer section of your Page Setup.
"Sometimes the application is slow. Why is this?"
The speed of an application on the internet can depend on a broad variety of things. The type of computer equipment and software you are using can affect the speed of the application. For example, although you may use CargoCover® using Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer, you will find the application faster with the latest version of Internet Explorer (available from www.microsoft.com). The speed of the line is also a factor depending on whether you are using a 56K modem, ISDN, DSL or Cable connections. The Internet Services Provider (ISP) you use can also have an impact as different ISPs use different circuit routes. Some take longer than others. For further information, contact CargoCover® Customer Support at 1-888-289-7744 or 1-514-289-9090 or e-mail to support@CargoCover®.com
"What is Transit insurance?"
Transit Insurance covers goods and or merchandise while in ordinary course of transit from one location to another.
"My transit carrier provides insurance, why do I need to buy insurance?"
Your own transit policy ensures sufficient limits of liability, known coverage conditions and consolidated claims handling. Additionally, your own policy will be a less expensive alternative to transit carrier provided insurance.
"What is the difference between inland transit and ocean cargo coverage?"
Inland transit covers domestic transits via land conveyances and/or air shipments (domestic vessel transits are usually insured under an Ocean Cargo Policy). Ocean Cargo Insurance provides coverage for International ocean and/or air shipments on a warehouse to warehouse basis (including the land connecting conveyance transits).
"What does Warehouse to Warehouse Mean?"
Coverage in transit Insurance is often referred to as Warehouse to Warehouse. It is important to note however that coverage is actually determined by the terms of sale used in each transaction (F.O.B., etc.). Coverage is warehouse to warehouse only when the 'Assured' is responsible to provide such coverage based on the sales terms. This coverage attaches at the point at which transit commences, and terminates when the cargo is delivered to the final destination or after a specific period of time, whichever occurs first. Both the attachment and termination points may be far inland, many miles from the ports of loading and discharge.
"What is an open marine cargo policy?"
An open policy is one which is open until canceled. There is no expiration date, but rather an anniversary date, which is used as a reference point for billing, rate changes, etc.
"Why are certificates of insurance for cargo shipments different from an "Accord Form certificate of insurance?"
Ocean Marine cargo Insurance Certificates which often accompany shipment documentation to third parties, are negotiable documents which entitle the bearer to collect claim settlement. They are frequently requested by banks in letter of credit transactions.
"Why do I need War Risks Insurance?"
War Risks Insurance is a separate contract/policy which offers protection against war perils (stray mines and torpedoes, terrorist acts at sea, etc.), while the cargo is at sea. Combined with the Cargo Policy, there is coverage for Missing Vessels in one policy or the other. Consideration for Strikes riots and Civil Commotions ( SR & CC) coverage is included in the War Risks premium. The SR&CC coverage is added on to the Cargo Policy by endorsement.
"What is a General Average?"

There are three elements required which establish a General Average:

  • A peril to the common venture For example: A storm at sea, which threatens the vessel itself, cargo carried on board (some of which may be yours) as well as the lives of the passengers and crew. Together these constitute the common venture.
  • An extraordinary sacrifice or expenditure to avert the peril. This could involve jettisoning cargo to lighten the vessel, or engagement of a salvage tug to tow the damaged vessel, etc.
  • The successful preservation of the venture. If the vessel is not preserved, you may be presented with a conventional marine claim and not a General Average.
In summary, when the vessel owner declares a general average, the vessel owner and all of the cargo interests will share the expenses associated with the general average on a pro-rata basis. These expenses are covered under your Marine Cargo Policy.
